Animojis are custom, animated versions of emoji characters found on iPhone. The feature uses new Face ID facial-recognition system, currently exclusive to the iPhone X, to create 3D emoji mirroring user’s own facial expressions. There is also an option in iOS 11.3 update that brings four new Animoji to use with the iPhone X. Apple is adding a lion, a bear, a skull, and a dragon to the mix.
In order to process face data, Apple has developed the new A11 Bionic neural engine.
A11 Bionic Neural Engine
It is quintessentially a built-in neural engine, a specialized hardware for a set of machine learning algorithms. Animoji leverages the TrueDepth camera system used for Face ID as well as the A11 Bionic chip to capture and analyze more than 50 different muscle movements in your face. It then mirrors your expressions in different emoji to produce Animoji.
TrueDepth Camera System
TrueDepth camera system will detect your face with the flood illuminator, even in the dark. The infrared camera will take an image and the dot projector will project over 30,000 invisible infrared dots. The system uses the infrared image and dots and pushes through neural networks to create a mathematical model of face.
Neural Networks
iPhone X will check mathematical model against the set up and store on your device to see if it’s a match in order to unlock your phone. This happens in real-time and invisibly.
Animoji is only available on the latest and greatest iPhone X models with Face ID, the feature is not available on earlier iPhone models, it must be iPhone X (or newer). This feature is not available on iPhone 8, iPhone 7, iPad, or earlier iOS device models.

Conclusion
For critics of Animojis, debating its usefulness, think about this: Animoji is the perfect option for users who are not comfortable putting their emotions in words. Animoji helps record user’s message. Behind the mask of the unicorn, users can adapt to preferred voice or persona to convey your message. Several iPhone app development companies are looking to leverage this new feature in innovative ways.
